If you’re wondering is the iPhone 18 worth buying, the answer depends a lot on which iPhone you already have.

The iPhone 18 is still not officially announced, so we don’t have final specifications yet. However, the current leaks point to a new A20 chip, potentially 12GB of RAM on the standard model, and several improvements aimed at Apple Intelligence and efficiency. The Pro models are expected to arrive first in September 2026, while the standard iPhone 18 is reportedly being pushed to early 2027.

That makes the upgrade question more interesting than simply comparing the newest phone with the previous one. If you have an iPhone 16, the answer could be very different from someone who already owns an iPhone 17.

What is new about the iPhone 18?

The biggest expected change is the A20 chip.

Current reports point to Apple’s first 2nm iPhone chip, replacing the 3nm A19 generation used in the iPhone 17. The move to a smaller manufacturing process should bring improvements in both performance and power efficiency. One report cited by MacRumors suggests the 2nm process could provide around a 15% performance improvement while maintaining similar power efficiency, although this is still based on reports rather than Apple’s own testing.

The other interesting rumor is 12GB of RAM for the standard iPhone 18. That would put it on the same memory level as the iPhone 17 Pro rather than the standard iPhone 17. The reason is likely related to Apple Intelligence, since more advanced on-device AI features require more memory.

So while the iPhone 18 may not look dramatically different from the iPhone 17, the internal hardware could be a much bigger change.

What about the iPhone 18 Pro?

This is where the rumored upgrades become much more interesting.

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to keep roughly the same 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch display sizes, but Apple may reduce the size of the Dynamic Island by moving some Face ID components underneath the display. The current rumor is not a completely hidden Face ID system; instead, it appears to be a smaller cutout.

The cameras could also receive a meaningful upgrade. The main 48MP camera is rumored to get a variable aperture, allowing the lens to control how much light reaches the sensor. This could give the camera more flexibility in bright and low-light conditions and provide greater control over depth of field. The feature is more strongly associated with the Pro models, particularly the Pro Max, than the standard iPhone 18.

There is also a rumored C2 Apple-designed modem, potentially bringing better cellular efficiency and additional satellite connectivity. Apple is also expected to introduce a newer wireless connectivity chip alongside it.

The Pro models are therefore a more substantial upgrade than the standard iPhone 18 appears to be.

iPhone 18 vs iPhone 17

This is where things get complicated.

The standard iPhone 17 already made a much bigger jump than its name might suggest. It introduced a 6.3-inch ProMotion display with up to a 120Hz refresh rate, the A19 chip, a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system and an 18MP Center Stage front camera. Apple also upgraded the front glass to Ceramic Shield 2.

That means the standard iPhone 18 does not need to fix many obvious weaknesses.

If the current rumors are correct, its main advantages will be the A20 chip, potentially 12GB of RAM and improved efficiency. Those are useful upgrades, but they probably won’t make an iPhone 17 feel old overnight.

So if you already own an iPhone 17, I would not consider the standard iPhone 18 a particularly strong upgrade.

The situation is different if you’re comparing the iPhone 17 Pro with the iPhone 18 Pro. The A20 Pro, smaller Dynamic Island, new modem, improved display technology and variable-aperture camera could make the upgrade more attractive. Still, it looks more like an evolution than a complete redesign.

iPhone 18 vs iPhone 16

The case for upgrading from an iPhone 16 is much stronger.

The standard iPhone 16 has a 6.1-inch OLED display and does not have ProMotion, while the iPhone 17 moved to a larger 6.3-inch display with 120Hz ProMotion. The iPhone 16 also uses the A18 chip and a 48MP Fusion main camera.

If the iPhone 18 keeps the iPhone 17’s display improvements and adds the A20 chip and potentially 12GB of RAM, someone moving from an iPhone 16 would be getting several generations of changes at once.

The difference would be even larger for an iPhone 16 Pro owner considering the iPhone 18 Pro. The 16 Pro already has a 6.3-inch ProMotion display and a strong camera system, so the upgrade is less dramatic than going from the standard 16 to the standard 18. But the rumored A20 Pro, variable aperture, smaller Dynamic Island and new modem could still make sense for someone who wants the latest hardware.

Should you upgrade to the iPhone 18?

Here’s how I would look at it based on the current rumors.

If you have an iPhone 15 or older

Yes, the iPhone 18 could be worth the upgrade.

You’ll be jumping several generations in display technology, processor performance, cameras and AI capabilities. At this point, the age of your current phone matters more than whether every individual iPhone 18 upgrade is revolutionary.

If you have an iPhone 16

Yes, especially if you want a noticeable upgrade.

The jump to a newer display, A20 chip and potentially 12GB of RAM would make more sense than upgrading every year. If you have the standard iPhone 16, the difference should be particularly noticeable.

If you have an iPhone 16 Pro

Maybe.

You already have ProMotion, a powerful processor and a capable camera system. I’d consider the iPhone 18 Pro if the variable-aperture camera and other rumored changes actually make it into the final product.

If you have an iPhone 17

Probably not.

The iPhone 17 already has ProMotion, the A19 chip, 48MP cameras and the new Center Stage front camera. Unless the A20, extra RAM or another feature matters specifically to you, keeping the 17 for another generation makes more financial sense.

If you have an iPhone 17 Pro

The upgrade is optional rather than necessary.

The iPhone 18 Pro looks better on paper, but you’re still moving from a very new flagship to another flagship. The biggest reasons to upgrade would be the camera changes, smaller Dynamic Island, A20 Pro and new connectivity features.

If you’re coming from an iPhone 15 or older, it probably will be.

If you have an iPhone 16, the upgrade should be meaningful enough to justify considering it, particularly if the rumored 12GB RAM and A20 chip make it into the final product.

For iPhone 17 owners, however, I’d be much more cautious. The standard iPhone 18 appears to be an evolution of the iPhone 17 rather than a major redesign.

The iPhone 18 Pro is a different story. Its rumored variable-aperture camera, smaller Dynamic Island, A20 Pro, new modem and other hardware changes could make it one of the more interesting iPhone upgrades in several years. But there is another issue: price.

Recent industry research from TrendForce estimates that the iPhone 18 Pro’s bill of materials could be nearly 38% higher than the previous generation, largely because of memory and other component costs. That does not automatically mean Apple will raise the retail price by 38%, but substantial price increases are currently being discussed.

That could change the value proposition considerably.

For now, the simplest answer is this: iPhone 16 owners have a good reason to consider the iPhone 18, iPhone 17 owners can probably wait, and anyone considering the iPhone 18 Pro should pay close attention to the final camera upgrades and its price before deciding.
